The Next Project:

Builds upon young peoples interests to encourage them to engage in the world around them

Hip hop culture continues to be a significant influence amongst Aotearoa (New Zealand) youth and The Next believes it provides powerful opportunities for youth development

Peace Peoples........

Another couple of months gone and all I can say is 'bring on SPRING'

As you all know we have been running the hip hop youth workshops at Zeal in Wellington with the youth from Porirua Activity Centre and i have to say these workshops definately are more organised and more youth centre based.

This week we finished the last of our programme with the youth of Porirua Activity Centre. Man it was choice and sad because we won't see some of these young people again but some will be back next year.

As said in the first statement the workshops have run smoother and more youth centred and have totally become a real asset not only to Porirua Activity Centre and Zeal but the hip hop mentors and Global Education Centre and especially The Next.

The workshops are called "You Got Skool'd" and if you are interestest in getting them in your area click on contact us here.

suga Pop workshop

Suga Pop was on his 3rd professional trip here. He is a legend in professional dance, and learns foundations and advanced techniques in two of the 1970s West Coast street dance forms, popping and locking, which underpin much of today's popular street dance choreography.

SugaPop's affiliations include Electric Boogaloos, The Lockers, and Rock Steady Crew, and his recent choreographic credits include an episode of the American programme
"So You Think You Can Dance," a special Rock Steady Crew performance on US
"Dancing With the Stars," and contributions to the Gwen Stefani World Tour.

Click on the picture to see a youtube click of Sugapop and click here for boogaloo footage

Spexone (The Next coordinato) attended 2 of the workshops - beginners Locking dance form and then the advanced. Check the review:

Well I wasn't looking forward to doing this workshop since the workshop the last workshop I attended of Sugapops in 2005 I pretty much was left dead and useless afterwards. I tell ya the hardest workout that I have experienced in a while.

So 2008, I'm thinking....shoot I'm kinda in the same predicament again! However this time I found not only did we get taught some new information about the basics to the danceform of locking but got to do some action as well and I survived. I was feeling pretty good and started thinking "hey maybe Im fitter than what I think"........WRONG!

The advanced class wasn't any different from the beginners. The information was the same, the talk about the movement and technique were the same, however the intensity of the workshop was much more than the first one. But man was it AWESOME.

Sugapops style of teaching has really advanced, he has a better way of articulating some of that information that maybe he couldn't before and has really gained more insight into his dance, obviously through thought and mentors but also through the historical foundation knowledge of the danceform. A real informative workshop not only for people wanting to lock or pop but also for any dancer from any genre.....

K'Naan

At age 9, K'Naan was doing what most American kids were doing. He was hanging out on his neighborhood street corner, MC'ing for his friends, dropping Nas and Rakim verses, dreaming of a day when he would posses the lyrical skills and the rhythmic flow of his Hip Hop hero's only difference is that K'KAAN is from Mogadishu Somali. Click on the picture for his personal site and check out his site and video clips here.
